Wealthy Enough to Give

I read my fair share of personal finance and investing books. One thing similar among all of them is the concept of giving. Finance authors Dave Ramsey and David Bach, the entrepreneur author Mike Michalowicz, and value investors such as Warren Buffett, Mohnish Pabrai, and Guy Spier all have one thing in common. After making their millions, they give money away. A couple years ago Warren Buffett pledged to give away much of his billions of dollars in wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Why do I bring this up today? The other day I posted that Dr. SoS and I are really watching our spending and started a Zero Day Challenge for ourselves. I thought today would be a Zero Day for us, but then we shared the following chat while at work just prior to lunchtime.

Dr. SoS
I’m hungry. I might have to run to Sprouts. I don’t have any food here.

Mr. SoS
Can you get some to last you for a few days?

Dr. SoS
I just need to plan better so I’m not rushing in the morning.

Mr. SoS
Get some to last you today, tomorrow, and for you and Baby SoS on Friday.

I sighed because I thought we were going to have a Zero Day today. Now, Dr. SoS is the saver between us so she did not purchase several meals at once. She knows there is probably something at home to eat for tomorrow or we will have dinner left-overs she can take to work on Thursday. Little did I know, but my sigh was unwarranted because when she returned from Sprouts we shared the following chat.

Dr. SoS
Well, I picked out a little meat, cheese and trail mix bento box for $3.77, and the man behind me in line paid for it!

Mr. SoS
What? Really? Why?

Dr. SoS
He was an older guy, who seemed to be hanging out with another older guy, picking up lunch after golf, by the way they were dressed. He said, “You work hard – let me get that for you! ” and signaled the cashier to continue ringing his stuff.

Mr. SoS
That’s how I want to be when I get older.

Dr. SoS
I was so touched.

How cool is that? A guy Dr. SoS does not even know helped us achieve a Zero Spend day by picking up the tab for her lunch. I was serious about my comment, too. One of these days when my debts are all paid I will pick up the tab for others to help them along just as this gentleman helped my wife today. Thank you kind sir! Your kindness did not go unnoticed!

Saving now to Give later…

Mr. SoS
